David first directed at Teddington Theatre Club in 1988 when the club presented fringe shows at the Rose & Crown Pub Theatre in Hampton Wick. He adapted George V Higgins novel The Diggers Game and followed this in March 1989 with his own adaptation of Raymond Carver's short stories under the title What we talk about when we talk about Love, at the same venue.
His first major production at TTC's previous home at Hampton Court Theatre was Macbeth in October 1989, with Youth Action Theatre with whom he acted from 1971 to 1979. David acted with TTC from 1978, appearing in some 15 shows. As an actor he won a Swan Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Valmont in Eric Yardley's TTC production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses and shared Best Supporting Actor, for Biff, with David Wheatley, playing his brother Happy, in Eric's TTC production of Death of a Salesman.
Over the last ten years David has combined directing with both TTC and YAT, though he retired from acting in 1995 to concentrate on directing.
